Is Reiki for real?

REI: A Japanese word meaning “universal”
KI: A Japanese word meaning vital life force energy which penetrates and connects all.
REIKI is universal life force energy in manifestation through touch.
(from www.hospitalreiki.com)

“Reiki is an ancient Japanese method of natural healing based on channeling energy (KI) through the hands. Although this gentle touch therapy is not a substitute for medical care, however it is gentle, non-invasive and non-manipulative so is therefore safe to use regardless of the state of one’s health. It is estimated that there are more than one hundred thousand people practicing this ancient healing art throughout the world today. Recent studies further show that to date, over one million people in the USA alone have experienced Reiki.”

A Reiki practitioner moves her/his hands over a patient’s body, remaining a few minutes as energy is drawn by the patient through the practitioner, no more than 10-15 minutes in total for a session.

But many people at University Medical Center (UMC) seem to think it works to relieve stress and heal patients. It was introduced in 2001 to cancer patients at UMC by social worker Marsha Drozdoff, ACSW. She is a certified master teacher and experienced its healing benefits herself after being diagnosed with a neurological disorder. Marsha is using it at with radiation oncology patients and monthly Reiki group-sharing for cancer survivors at UMC. Contact her at 520-694-4605, or email info@hospitalreiki.com

Seems to me (a Japanese American) that this should be truly something Asian and spiritual, but I have to try it more than a brief experience once at a health fair. The Reiki practitioner did move her hands/arms slightly over different sections of my body (not massaging), saying that it would help my overall health.

I suppose it can’t hurt, through actual healing — by transference of energy by gentle human touch, or even psychosomatically by the placebo effect.

Have any of you tried Reiki? Have you found it helpful?
