For Tucsoncitizen.com readers, you know Ernie as the fellow blogger “From the Soul”, who is the former UA Wildcat Basketball star who still holds the title of the most points scored in any Wildcat game. Do you know what that record is? I’ll tell you on the bottom of this blog post. Ernie was born at St. Mary’s Hospital & raised in Tucson, attended the University of Arizona (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees), then moved to San Diego where he became a teacher, vice principal & principal until his retirement in 1999.

Bio from Anna Don:
“Anna Chan Don arrived in Tucson before World War II when her herbalist father chose this city in which to practice Chinese medicine. She married Anthony P. Don, a member of an early Chinese ranching family. After graduating from the University of Arizona, she accompanied her husband to the San Francisco area while he completed dental school. They then returned and settled in Tucson to raise their three sons. Ms. Don has a longstanding interest in Tucson Chinese history. She has volunteered at the Arizona Historical Society and contributed substantially to the production of its groundbreaking 1980 photographic exhibit The Chinese Experience in Arizona and Northern Mexico – 1870-1940.”

Bio from Lincoln Chin:
“He was Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Arizona from 1958 to 1990 and Assistant Dean in the College of Pharmacy from 1980 to 1990. He has been Professor Emeritus since 1990. Lincoln is an amateur historian, with special interest in Chinese immigration issues during the era of the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882 to 1943)”.

Tucson Meet Yourself is happening in downtown (El Presidio Park, Jacome Plaza – outside Joel D. Valdez Main library) on October 11, 12, 13. The Tucson Chinese Association will be hosting a food booth right outside the Main library (which I did eat at last year), selling their popular “dragon dogs”.

Hours of the festival:

Friday, October 11, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday, October 12, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
and Sunday, October 13, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Answer to question about Ernie’s point record: 46. See my previous post when he was recognized at McKale Center about his record (click here).

5:30 a.m. Endeavour launch party set for May 16 in Tucson

From Blog for Arizona’s political calender:

Monday, May 16, 5:30 a.m.: Rise and Shine — and come to the Trident Grill, 2033 E. Speedway Blvd. (east of Campbell Avenue), to watch the Space Shuttle Endeavour’s final launch with the Cactus Roots Team. We will be serving breakfast — and LOTS of coffee — and hope you’ll join us in cheering for Mark Kelly and the Endeavour’s crew as they launch their final mission to the International Space Station. (Launch Time: 8:56 a.m. EDT). Gabrielle is heading back to Florida for the launch — we hope you’ll come back to the Trident Grill to support Mark, Gabby, and the entire Endeavour crew. Sign up here to let us know you’ll be joining us on May 16th for breakfast and the Watch Party!

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has traveled once again from her Houston rehab hospital to Florida to see her husband Mark Kelly and his crew hopefully lift off tomorrow. Good luck to them all.

I reported on the April 29 launch & attended the luncheon watch party at the Trident Grill, even though the Endeavour’s launch was postponed (click here). Fellow Tucsoncitizen.com blogger Ernie McCray – “From the Soul” (visiting from San Diego) joined me and another friend. Other attendees were Ward 2 Councilman Paul Cunningham, LD 28 Rep. Steve Farley, former Arizona Assistant Attorney General Vince Rabago.

UPDATE: 5/16/11 6 a.m. We have lift off! “Expanding our knowledge, expanding our lives in space.” Good luck to Captain Mark Kelly and the Endeavour crew.

Ernie McCray, former Arizona Wildcat basketball player, honored at McKale Center last Saturday

He humbly told me this afternoon in thanking me for my Tucson Portrait Project blog that he had been in the Arizona Daily Star newspaper on Sunday. I remembered reading the front page article so I quickly checked the hard copy and realized that the Ernie McCray who had been commenting on our TC blogs for months, was the same man who was honored at McKale Center on February 13, for being the Wildcat basketball player who scored a record 46 points in one game against Los Angeles State, back on 2/6/1960. He still holds the record for the most points scored in any Wildcat game.

And these are his words to me that he was honored “just for scoring a bunch of points in a basketball game on a magical day close to the middle of the last Century. I must be old (smile).” Wow, just a bunch of 46 points.

But the story goes on to say that Ernie could not join his team for dinner at a restaurant later as he knew that he would not be served. Yes, racism existed back then against Black Americans here in the Old Pueblo. But Ernie is not bitter or angry according to the article.

Read more about Ernie, who is now 71 years old and a resident of San Diego, in the Star article (click here). He went on to get his Masters Degree from U of A as well and overcame the racism he had experienced along his life.

Congratulations Ernie for your record and for your loyalty to the Wildcats. I am pleased that while here last weekend you admired the Dia de Los Muertos art mural that “Artistic Tucson” blogged about at Speedway/Stone, and that you enjoyed seeing our faces immortalized on the tile portrait project under the 4th Avenue Underpass.

I have enjoyed your astute and kind comments over the months, and am happy for your recent honor. I used to play basketball with friends in my younger days and I know that what you did was a big deal, not just a “bunch of points”. Congratulations again from us here at the Tucson Citizen.
